Cataract

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a common condition that affects millions of people each year. They occur when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy, making it difficult to see clearly. Cataracts can make it hard to drive, read, or even recognize faces. Cataracts can develop at any age, but they are most common in older adults.

Cataract surgery is the only effective treatment for cataracts. The goal of surgery is to remove the clouded lens of your eye and replace it with a clear artificial one. This can restore your vision and improve your quality of life.

If you have cataracts, you may be a candidate for laser surgery. Laser surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can correct your vision and improve your quality of life.

At our eye clinic, we use the latest technology to treat cataracts quickly and effectively. We work closely with you to develop a customized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals.

Cataracts and Your Vision

What Causes Cataracts?

Cataracts are caused by a buildup of proteins in the lens of your eye that affects its clarity and function. This can occur as a result of aging, certain health conditions or medications, or environmental factors like exposure to UV light or cigarette smoke. Genetics may also play a role in developing cataracts.

There are several risk factors that can increase your chances of developing cataracts, including diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking and alcohol use, UV exposure, and poor nutrition.

How Do I Know If I Have Cataracts?

Cataracts typically develop slowly and do not usually cause pain, so you may not be aware that you have them until your vision has already begun to decline.

The telltale signs indicative of cataract formation include blurred or double vision (diplopia), impaired night vision, the perception of halos around lights, colors that are less vibrant, and text that doesn’t look crisp and clear

If you are experiencing symptoms of cataracts, or if you want more information about cataract surgery in Vancouver, talk to your doctor or an eye specialist today. With the right care and treatment, you can enjoy clear, comfortable vision for years to come.

What are the Different Types of Cataract Surgery?
There are three main types of cataract surgery: phacoemulsification, extracapsular surgery, and intracapsular surgery.

  • Phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification (or “phaco”) is the most common type of cataract surgery. It uses ultrasound pulses to break apart the lens and suction it out. This method is often preferred because it can be performed in a more precise and minimally invasive way, with faster recovery times and fewer risks of complications.

  • Extracapsular
Extracapsular surgery involves removing the entire cloudy lens through an incision on the outer edge of your cornea. While this type of surgery tends to be less expensive than phacoemulsification, it comes with a longer recovery time and higher risk of complications, such as inflammation or bleeding inside your eye.

  • Intracapsular
Intracapsular surgery is the least common type of cataract surgery, as it involves making much larger incisions in order to remove the entire cloudy lens from your eye. In addition to being more expensive and invasive than other types of cataract surgery, it can also lead to a higher risk of complications such as detached retina.
If you are considering cataract surgery, there are many factors that you will need to consider. These may include your age and overall health, the level of cloudiness or vision loss that you have experienced, and the preferences and experience of your surgeon. Since there are several different surgical techniques available, it is important to discuss these options with your doctor in order to find the best treatment for your individual needs. Ultimately, choosing the right type of cataract surgery can help ensure a successful recovery with minimal risk of complications.
